Masons first, roofers second

A chimney is masonry — and masonry is where we began.

Our name comes from the stone our founder set on his first chimney job. Twenty-five years on, that same standard holds: rake out the failed mortar to a sound depth, repoint with a matched mix, replace spalled bricks with matching stock, and dress new lead that’s chased into the brickwork — not just sealed with mastic that fails in a season. Done properly, a chimney stack stands for decades, not just the first winter.

What we do

Every chimney fault, fixed at the cause.

From a single repointed stack to a full rebuild with new lead and pots, one crew owns the whole chimney — so no detail falls between trades.

01

Chimney Repointing

Frost and age crumble the mortar between chimney bricks until the stack loosens and damp tracks in. We rake out the failed mortar and repoint with a matched, weather-resistant mix — recessed, struck and tooled to match the original joint profile and the character of the property.

02

Stack Rebuilds & Brick Repair

Where spalled bricks, leaning stacks or failed flaunching have gone too far for repointing, we take the stack down to sound brickwork and rebuild it true — matching bricks, bond and mortar so the repair reads as part of the original build, not a patch on it.

03

Flaunching & Mortar Caps

The mortar cap around the pot bases is what keeps rain out of the stack top. We renew cracked and eroded flaunching with a strong, weatherproof mortar, dressed to shed water and finished neat — the detail that stops most chimney leaks before they start.

04

Lead Flashing & Soakers

Where the chimney meets the roof, the lead does the work. We dress new code-4 and code-5 step flashing, aprons and soakers, and renew counter-flashing into the stack — the abutment detail that decides whether a chimney stays dry for decades or fails in a winter.

05

Pots, Cowls & Caps

Loose, cracked or missing pots are a danger in high winds. We re-bed and re-fix chimney pots, fit stainless steel cowls to stop rain and downdraught, and cap off disused flues cleanly — keeping the stack weathertight and the home safe.

06

Waterproofing & Damp Proofing

Porous brickwork sucks up rain and shows as damp stains on chimney breasts inside. We apply breathable masonry water repellent and renew failed damp-proof courses where needed — protecting the brick without trapping moisture that would only rot it from within.

When to call us

Six signs your chimney needs attention now.

  • Mortar dropping or crumbling from the chimney stack onto the roof below
  • Damp patches or brown staining on the chimney breast inside the house
  • Loose, cracked or leaning chimney pots visible from the ground
  • Spalled, blown or crumbling bricks on the stack face
  • Gaps or cracks in the lead flashing where the chimney meets the roof
  • Pieces of flaunching missing around the pot bases at the stack top

Failed mortar — the warning sign

Caught early, a repoint saves a rebuild

How we build it

Every stage, done properly.

From the survey to the last pot clip, one crew owns the whole chimney stack — so no detail falls between trades.

01

Survey & Access

We inspect the stack from the roof and inside the loft, photograph every defect, and advise plainly on what needs repointing, rebuilding or flashing. Scaffolding or a fixed roof ladder is set so the work is safe from start to finish.

02

Rake Out & Repoint

Failed mortar is raked out to a sound depth, the joints washed clean, and new mortar repointed in a matched mix — recessed, struck and tooled to the original profile. No smearing on the brick face, no shallow “weather-struck” that sheds in a season.

03

Brick & Stack Repair

Spalled and damaged bricks are cut out and replaced with matching stock, and any leaning or bulging section of stack is rebuilt true to the line. Bond, brick and mortar all matched so the repair belongs to the building.

04

Flaunching Renewal

The old, cracked flaunching is removed and a strong weatherproof mortar cap is re-laid around the pot bases, dressed to shed water and finished neat — the stack top sealed against the rain that does the most damage.

05

Lead Flashing & Soakers

New step flashing, aprons and soakers are dressed around the stack, with counter-flashing chased into the brickwork and pointed solid. The abutment is made weathertight for the long term, not just sealed with mastic that fails in a year.

06

Pots, Cowls & Handover

Pots are re-bedded and re-fixed, cowls or caps fitted where needed, and the stack waterproofed with a breathable masonry treatment. We clear the roof, walk you round the finished work, and register your warranty.

Why it lasts

Six things every chimney repair gets.

A chimney fails at its mortar, its bricks and its lead. We build all three right — and back the whole repair in writing.

Beneath the pots

The layers that keep a stack standing.

The mortar, the bricks and the lead are what make a chimney last. Here’s what goes on before the pots go back.

Word of mouth

Neighbours talk. Dry chimney breasts prove it.

“Our 1903 terrace chimney was shedding mortar onto the roof and the bedroom wall was damp. Corner Stone raked it all out and repointed the stack in a day, matched the mortar colour, and the wall has dried out completely. Proper craftsmen.”

Helen & Roy Marsden

Chimney repointing, Durham

“A leaning stack with spalled bricks — two firms wanted to take the whole chimney down. Corner Stone rebuilt the top four courses, matched the bricks, and dressed new lead flashing. Saved the stack, saved us a fortune, and it looks original.”

Patrick O’Donnell

Stack rebuild & leadwork, Tyne and Wear

“Damp on the chimney breast every winter. They repointed the stack, renewed the flaunching, fitted a cowl, and treated the brickwork. Bone dry since, and the 5-year warranty is in writing. Fair price, tidy lads.”
